Mayo James Dupre, a long-time resident of New Iberia, died peacefully at his son’s home on January 21, 2015 in Montgomery, Alabama at the age of 75 following a prolonged illness.
Mayo was born in Opelousas, Louisiana. He graduated from the Academy of Immaculate Conception (AIC) in May 1956. Mayo settled in New Iberia where he managed American Department Store, then Anthony’s Department Store, and finally Stage Department Store for a total of 38 years. His responsibilities included manager and regional area supervisor. The New Iberia location was consistently a top selling store in the company. Mayo retired in 1997.
Mayo and Ruby welcomed five children and set about teaching them the importance of education, morality, and the value of dedication, honesty, and strong work ethics. His children remember him as a father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. All are successful in their chosen career paths and have retained the values that Mayo and Ruby instilled upon them, including a genuine appreciation of life. His children will miss their father and his grandchildren will miss their “Grandpa” and “Paa-Paa.”
Mayo loved hunting, fishing, playing bouree`, watching football, and traveling with family and friends. Upon retirement, his passion became caring for over 200 rose bushes in his beautiful rose garden. He was a member of the American and Acadiana Rose Societies and a Consulting Rosarian. Mayo was dedicated to his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Mayo is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruby Blanchard Dupre, their five children Lon Dupre and wife Diane of Monett, Missouri, Lori Percle of New Iberia, Dr. Allen Dupre and wife Debbie of Montgomery, Alabama, Alice Oliver and husband Rory of New Iberia, and Mark Dupre and wife Trisha of Loreauville, Louisiana. Mayo leaves behind his grandchildren, Jennifer and Scott Dupre, Dustin Tudor and wife Chelsea; Derek Tudor and wife Jennifer, and Darrin Tudor and wife Hannah, Alison and Elisa Percle, Sara and Michael Dupre, Kelly Michelle and Allison Lewis, and Sean Oliver; and his Great grandchildren, Riley, Tate, Collin, Amari, Brogan, Eliyas, Makenna, Dreven, Millie, and Grayson. Mayo will be greatly missed by his sister, Norma Roy and husband Gerald of Opelousas and their families.
Serving as pallbearers will be his sons, Lon, Allen, and Mark Dupre, his son-in-law Rory Oliver, and his grandsons, Sean Oliver and Michael Dupre.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and medical personnel for the excellent care, support, and friendship provided for Mayo in New Iberia, Lafayette, and Montgomery, Alabama.
