NEW IBERIA - Melinda Garza Coleman entered this Earth November 17, 1952, and entered God's kingdom on Thursday, August 11, 2011, with her family by her side in Houston, TX. Though she lost her valiant fight with lung cancer, she victoriously entered Heaven’s gates. As a lifelong native of New Iberia, Melinda was a stranger to no one. She was a local business owner for 20 years and touched hearts and shared smiles along the way with those she crossed paths. She also shared her love for God and Jesus Christ as a Catechism teacher.
Though she will be sadly missed by all that love her, we find comfort that she is rejoicing with God in Heaven. She is survived by her husband, John A. Coleman, Jr. of New Iberia, LA; twin daughters, Amy Coleman of Houston, TX, and April Coleman of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Belen and Alexander Artiaga of Houston, TX; sisters, Carmela Garza of St. Louis, MO and Francesca Guerra of San Antonio, TX; a brother, Miguel Garza of San Antonio, TX; nephews, John Fritz, Jr., of Houston, TX, Carlos Fritz of St. Louis, MO, Phillip Garza of Kenner, LA, and Austin Garza of Lafayette, LA, and a host of other family members in the New Iberia area and Texas.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Guadalupe Camacho Garza; father, Abelardo Garza; brothers, Mario Juan Garza and Lalo Santiago Garza; and sister, Juanita Garza.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 19, 2011, starting at 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm with the Rosary at 7:00 pm at Evangeline Funeral Home in New Iberia, LA. Visitation will resume at 8:00 am, Saturday, August 20, 2011, with a mass to follow at 10:00 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery on Admiral Doyle Drive.
A gathering of family and friends will be held after burial services at the Senior Center in New Iberia City Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made instead to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
