NEW IBERIA - Philip "Papaw" William Dayton Sr., age 74, of New Iberia, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newburgh, New York, Philip was the beloved son of Louise Maye Weygant Dayton and Oscar William Dayton.
Philip 's artistic talents were as vast as his heart. He found solace in painting , his brush bringing to life the magnificent figures of eagles, creatures he admired for their strength and grace. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Philip found joy in tending to his garden and caring for his tropical fish, finding peace in the simple pleasures of life. But above all, he treasured the moments spent gathered around the table, sharing hearty meals with his beloved grandchildren, who held the key to his heart.
Philip is survived by his loving son, Philip Dayton Jr., and his daughter, Tara D. Romero. He is also survived by his brother, Oscar J. Dayton (Kim), and his sister, Susan Dayton Chatman. Philip leaves behind a legacy of love through his numerous grandchildren: Taylor Barras, Haley Blanchard, Bryanna Romero, Anna Maye Romero, William Romero, Sophia Broussard, Lillian Blanchard, Drew Blanchard, Isla Flynn, Ezra Barras, Leon Belaire, Roselyn Romero, and Charlotte Belaire.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlene Oubre Dayton, and his parents, Oscar William Dayton and Louise Maye Weygant Dayton.
Friends and family are invited to honor Philip 's life during visitation hours at Evangeline Funeral Home, 314 East St. Peter Street, New Iberia, Louisiana 70560, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 10:45 AM. A funeral service will follow on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at the same location officiated by Pastor Kevin Rowe.
Philip will be laid to rest privately at a later date, surrounded by the love of his family and the memories he cherished. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he loved.
