NEW IBERIA –Services will be conducted for Mr. Richard Steve Berzas, age 67, on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Evangeline Funeral Home at 5:30 pm. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #1982. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm on Tuesday at Evangeline Funeral Home.
A native of Mamou, LA and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Berzas passed away at 8:16 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Berzas was a Veteran of the US Army having served his country honorably and faithfully during the Vietnam Era. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Air Medal and numerous others.
He was affectionately known as “Coach” to many co-workers and students. Mr. Berzas received his Master’s Degree in Education, his +30 and Education Specialist from McNeese State University. He began his career in 1968 at Jeanerette Senior High where he was a coach and teacher. He then went on to serve as Assistant Principal at Anderson Middle School from 1971-1979 and then Principal at Loreauville High School from 1979-1986.
After his retirement from the Iberia Parish School Board he was employed as an Insurance Salesman and Manager with American General Life and Accident Insurance for 15 years, where he was recognized as a top performer and received numerous awards.
Some of his favorite hobbies included wood working and camping, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy to his family always reminding them that your family is of the utmost importance. He made a difference in many people’s lives and will be greatly missed by everyone that loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Perron Berzas of New Iberia; two sons, Ryan Scott Berzas and companion Crystal Bonner; Richard Micah Berzas; two daughters, Dana Michele Berzas and Jill B. Johnson and husband Jude all of New Iberia; six grandchildren, Katherine Solomon, Haley Solomon, Steve Berzas, Amber Berzas, Hannah Johnson and Madison Johnson and one sister, Elizabeth Hope Harris and husband Robert of Dallas, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Avie and Ethel Chapman Berzas.
