NEW IBERIA – Funeral Services will be conducted for Mr. Richard George Betar, age 89, at 3:00 pm Friday, March 1, 2013 at Evangeline Funeral Home with Fr. Steve LeBlanc officiating. Interment will be held at Rosehill Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post #1982.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Thursday with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 10:00 am on Friday until service time.
A native and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Betar passed away at 12:06 am on Wednesday February 27, 2013 at River Oaks Nursing Home.
Mr. Betar was a WWII Veteran of the US Army who served his country honorably in the European Theatre. He was a 32nd Degree member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM; and was a ham radio operator (Call letters, K5REN) who assisted many servicemen in communicating with their families while stationed at the naval base.
Mr. Betar was a master mechanic in machinery who could repair and fix everything; and was the owner of Cajun Clock Co. He was a very artistic person who enjoyed building Cajun cabins and model ships in glass bottles. His love of cooking was very evident in his specialties, kibbeh, grape leaf and cabbage mahshi, fig preserves and apple cakes, but his most important kitchen duty was in the delivery of Sadie’s delicious pralines to her many loyal customers.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda B. Breaux and husband Lee of New Iberia and Betsy B. Hebert and husband Hodgie of Lafayette; one granddaughter, Genee’ Nicole Hebert of Lafayette; one nephew, David Taylor and two nieces, Fern Waguespack and Kathy Hirsch.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Chataignier Betar; parents, James and Ada Fern Mungerson Betar; one brother, Harold Betar and one sister, Betty Taylor.
Pallbearers will be Lee Breaux, Hodgie Hebert, Sonny Waguespack, Eric Waguespack, Neil Chataignier, John Betar and Jude Chataignier.
