Richard James "Nub" Legnon, 87, of Cypermort Point, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025. He was born on Avery Island on December 15, 1937, to the late Bennett and Ledie Richard Legnon.
Richard graduated from New Iberia Senior High and went on to further his education at South Louisiana Institute, where he played football.
He dedicated over 20 years of his life to the Avery Island Saltmine as a Maintenance Supervisor, a testament to his hard work and devotion to the community.
In 1973, Richard and his family settled in Cypermort Point, where he opened Cypermort Point Supply House, operating it until 2002. His career also saw him as a captain with Warrior Offshore Charter Service for more than 20 years and as the owner of D&R Construction Services. A respected leader, Richard served on the Board of Directors for Teche Electric for many years and volunteered with the Cypermort Point Volunteer Fire Department in the 1980s, always striving to improve the lives of those around him.
A man of great community spirit, Richard was a driving force behind the growth of Cypermort Point, supporting both the commercial and residential fishing industries, the Cypermort Point Mardi Gras (where he was honored as the first King), and the development of the Beacon Point community.
Affectionately known as "Nub" to his longtime friends and "Poka" to his beloved grandchildren, Richard cherished the relationships he built throughout his life. He loved fishing, boating, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends—especially those in his close-knit "U-Can Gang." He also enjoyed watching football and golf, often found with a smile on his face as he rooted for his favorite teams.
Richard’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and service to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of countless memories, shared laughter, and a reputation for being a kind-hearted and hardworking man. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
