Monday, November 7, 2022…just after the morning sun rose on another clear day, Richard “Dickey” Joseph Segura gently closed his eyes to this earthly life, passing away peacefully with his family at his side. He was 85. Dickey, as he was affectionately known, was born January 15, 1937 in New Iberia to the late Alpha Segura and the late Vernice Migues Myers.
Dickey worked in the oil and gas industry with Teledyne Movable Offshore, and then with Amoco. Sis shared that after 30 years in the industry, Dickey at the age of 51 decided to retire after being asked to go offshore for a hitch during the same week that his first grandchild was being born. So he retired that same day and has not missed an important event since.
Since his early childhood, Dickey has always had a love of the outdoors. He spent many weekends and weeks when he was in from his job, at the camp on the levee. Donna and Dean shared memories of getting out of school and leaving right away in the family station wagon, heading to the levee to fish, play ball and share in endless meals from their grandparents and aunts camps next door. Another of Dickey’s passions was his houseboat named “Chere Tout Tout” that brought some great times and fishing out on Lake Dauterive.
Never one to let the grass grow beneath his feet, he and Sis spent a great deal of time in their motor coach traveling extensively. Through their membership with The Crusin’ Cajuns RV Club, they visited every state with the exception of Deleware, all provinces of Canada, and traveled to Mexico. One of Dickey’s favorite destinations was visiting friends at the Stonehill Winery in Hermann, Missouri where they enjoyed good company, food and of course wine. Not to mention that this was their starting point for their month long vacation in the RV.
Above all, his greatest love was his family. He and Sis were so very proud of the children and their families. The grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to him. Within the heart of this man, who was known to have a dry wit about him that kept the entire room in laughter, was also a heart of gold. He was kind, generous, and truly cared about those who he was happy to call his friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts and thoughts of all who were blessed to have crossed his path. Rest well Dickey for we will meet again. We love you.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife and best friend of 63 years, Sis Segura; his son and daughter, Dean Segura and wife Becky and Donna Segura Adams and husband Bret; his three grandchildren, Alex Adams and wife Callie, Andre’ Adams and wife Tyler, and Paige Temple and husband John; his eight great grandchildren, Emile, Jean-Luc, Henri and Blake Adams, and Camille, Cooper, Carter and Caroline Temple; his sister, Harriet Kellams and husband Don; and his half-brothers, Darrell Segura and wife Carol, Tommy Segura and wife Becky, and James Segura and wife Georgia.
Along with his parents, Dickey was preceded in death by his step-father, Ned J. Myers; his sister, Dawn Nunez; brother-in-law, Al Nunez; his in-laws, Otis and Rita Norris; and a niece, Robin Kellams.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Fr. Nathan Comeaux will be the celebrant. Following the Mass, Mr. Dickey will be laid to rest at Holy Family Mausoleum.
