A gathering of family and friends will take place at Evangeline Funeral Home on Saturday from 8:30 am until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 11:00 am.

Before her death, Roberta lovingly composed her own obituary which reads as follows.

I was born Roberta Lee Lopez on September 22, 1955 to Ernest and Roberta Lopez in New Iberia, LA. I guess I’ve always been a force to be reckoned with. James, my late son, used to warn his friends and girlfriends about me. I was a strong willed, hard headed, soft hearted, opinioned, self-reliant, sarcastic woman who would do anything I could to help people. I had no filter, and if I thought it, I said it. Not always a good thing, I suppose. I loved the challenge of learning new things, and would attempt and succeed at most. From carpentry, painting pictures, sewing, crocheting, rosary making, quilting, cake decorating to mechanical work. I love reading and the peacefulness of my sun room and Avery Island.

My life’s motto was “A woman’s gotta do what a woman’s gotta do.” and I was damn good at it. I collected “Horny Horses” AKA Unicorns and amassed a collection of over 200 at one point.

My late son, James; my grandsons, Jessie and Jake; and my late sweet brother, Ernie gave my life meaning. I loved them to the moon and back.

I am survived by sister, Sandra Norwood and husband George, Sr; my grandsons, Jessie James and Jake Brian Labit; Lela Babineaux, AKA the daughter-in-law; six nephews and two nieces; a gaggle of greats and other relations; and Majesty, my fluffy hefa-lump puppy.

I am preceded in death by my parents, Ernest, and Roberta Baudoin Lopez; my son, James Brian Labit; my brothers, John and Ernie Lopez; and my fur babies, Cajun Baby and Bayou Wraith who were Great Pyrenees Mountain Dogs.

My deepest thanks to the incredible Heather, Darian, Colton, and the people of Hospice of Acadiana, especially Seth, Stephanie, Jenee, and Carolyn, for helping an old lady with ALS die with some dignity.

Sandra Norwood, Roberta’s sister, would like to thank George Norwood, Tonya Desormeaux, and George, Jr. and Michelle Norwood for always doing what Roberta asked you to do.

Sandra also extends many many thanks to Roberta’s God sent friend and care giver, Heather Burke, for taking such great care of Roberta, and to Heathers children, Darian and Colton, for helping. Thanks to Lela for bringing Jessie and Jake to visit Roberta. Thanks to everyone who helped, visited, sent flowers, and prayed for Roberta.

And lastly, thanks to the "Pas Tous La'" Gang for always visiting on Wednesdays.

Pallbearers will be George John Norwood, Jr., Trent Menard, Lance LeBlanc, Scott Frith, Brian Griffin, and Stuart Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jessie James Labit and Jake Brian Labit.

In lieu of flowers, please send flowers to someone you love and "worry bout YOUself"

Berta always, yes always made me laugh. We had an easy, comfortable friendship. She will always be Aunt Berta to my child and grandkids. She was one of those “what you see is what you get” kind of people. Loved that trait in her because she had a very kind heart. I will miss her dearly but I’m thankful she is with the one who made her the happiest, her son! Rest In Peace Berta, you most assuredly earned it!❤️❤️
