A native and resident of New Iberia, Velma passed away at 11:50 pm on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Amelia Manor Nursing Home in Lafayette surrounding by her loving family.
Velma Mae Savoie LeBlanc was born on December 11, 1937 to the late Oswald and Elita Hoffpauir Savoie and was one of four children. Velma and her sisters lost their mother at a young age and were raised on a farm by their father and step-mother. At age five, she caught a rare fever and was very sick. It resulted in the loss of her voice and hearing. Velma had a good life despite her disability. She was always surrounded with love by her family and friends.
In 1956 at age 19, Velma graduated and only had two jobs in her life time. She worked in a movie theater ticket booth and at a New Iberia drycleaners. Velma loved to crochet blankets and other items. Her family fondly remembers when she made a quilt and used four chairs to hold it up. They used to play underneath the blanket and pretend it was a tent. Velma would simply smile and let them play. She raised her five children very well and loved her family very much. A loving mother and grandmother, Velma will be truly and deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Samuel “Sammy” LeBlanc and wife Michelle of New Iberia, Ramona Eskine and husband Johnny of New Iberia, Beatrice Viator of Youngsville, and twins, Jean LeBlanc of Mississippi and Jeanette Broussard of Kaplan; sisters, Judy Champagne of Baton Rouge and Barbara Nell Mooney of Lydia; thirteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oswald and Elita Hoffpauir Savoie; and sister, Joy Rita Haywood.
Pallbearers will be members and friends of the family.
Though it is hard to let go, she was tired and ready to quit the fight. She was ready to join her mother and sister in Heaven. So remember her in good and happy times, for she will always be remembered in our hearts and memories.
