Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Sunday with a Rosary at 6:30 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 am on Monday until service time.
A native of Patoutville and resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Medver passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015 at home with her family by her side.
A graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School in St. Martinville, Mrs. Medver also attended SLI in Lafayette and was a graduate of the Gerami School of Dance in Lafayette. Her passion for dance and sharing it with others launched her career at the age of 16 when she opened her first studio; later named the Violet Medver School of Dance. In the thirty-seven years that Mrs. Medver owned and operated her school, thousands of students, young and old, have shared in her love for dance. Her students learned tap, ballet, jazz, tumbling and even adult social dancing.
Throughout her illness, she continued to teach with vigor and enthusiasm. Her adult tap classes provided her students with the opportunity to benefit from her extensive knowledge of tap technique while providing for her the inspiration to fight to continue to teach. Many have enjoyed her students’ performances in countless social and civic events throughout the years.
In addition, she led in her community by serving as Director of the Children’s Mardi Gras Carnival for years and was appointed the official Dance Choreographer for the Krewe of Andalusia for twenty years. She served as a choreographer for Dancing with the Stars Catholic High for three years; winning the mirror ball trophy twice. Her expertise was respected and revered beyond New Iberia. In fact, she served as spokesperson for the Manhattan Dance Project of New York City and served as a member of the Louisiana Association of Dance Masters and Dance Masters of America for fifty-seven years.
Dancing was her true passion and she always considered it a great privilege to be a teacher. She always expressed her gratitude to her Godmother, Corinne Gerami, Merry Joy Gerami and Corinne Gerami Cornay for inspiring her dance career.
Her other passion was her loving family. Violet will be deeply missed by all those who she knew and loved.
She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four years, Carl Medver; two daughters, Jennifer M. Hebert and husband Jason and Margaret M. Jaques and husband Robert; four grandchildren, Jonathan Thiessen, Jillian Hebert, Emma Jaques, and Noah Jaques; one brother, L.J. D’Albor and wife Patricia; and five sisters, Shirley D. Akers and husband Donald, Theresa D. Olivier, Leona D. Logan and husband Jonathan, Tootie D. Theriot and husband Richard, and Jeanne D. Cole.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Olympe Beslin D’Albor.
Pall Bearer will be Jonathan Thiessen.
The Medver Family wishes to thank the incredible professionals at Hospice of Acadiana who so graciously served as a pillar of support during Mrs. Medver’s final days. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Acadiana.
