

NEW IBERIA - A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Holy Family Cemetery Chapel in New Iberia for Wilton "Heavy" Helveston. Pastor David Jeffreys, Associate Pastor of Highland Baptist Church, will officiate. Military Honors will be rendered by the Iberia Veterans Honor Guard following services.
Mr. Helveston passed away at his home on April 7 at 1:30 pm at the age of 68. He was born on May 22, 1948 in Mobile, AL to the late Wilton E. Helveston and Cassie Broxson Helveston.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he honorably served our country in the Army in the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. He moved to Louisiana in the early 1970's, and being an avid hunter and fisherman he quickly came to love Acadiana. He earned the nickname of "Heavy" while working in the oilfield, a name that stuck with him for the rest of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandra Few Helveston; daughter Tammy Helveston White and husband Chuck of New Iberia; sons William Helveston and wife Anita of Tomball, TX, and Christopher Helveston and wife Barbara of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Brennan White and wife Rachel, Breigh White, Drew Helveston, Alex Helveston, Blayde White, Scout Helveston, and Colin Helveston; 1 honorary grandson Jakob Deckard; 1 great-grandchild, Lillian White; a brother Gerald Helveston of Mobile; two sisters Helen Deese of Houston and Patricia Simmons of Mobile; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Luis Alvarez and his staff, the physicians and staffs of the Lafayette, Alexandria and Shreveport VA Medical Centers, the staff of Hospice of Acadiana, especially his hospice nurse Seth Porche, as well as a special thanks to his compassionate caregivers, Beverly Johnny, Andrea Gaddison, and Debra Neuville.
