George was born on November 24, 1931 in Pawcatuck, CT. He is the 4th of 6 children born to Peter & Catherine (Keegan) Mercier Jr. George was predeceased by his wife Mavis Marie (Nile) Mercier.
George’s formative years were spent working at various “fun” jobs that he loved to tell stories about: making bread at the Mohegan bakery in Westerly, RI and being a caddy at the Watch Hill Country Club & Golf Course (where he says he actually caddied for a “real life European Princess”). He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and was immediately sent over to Korea. To his last day of life, he was very proud of his service to our Country. Upon his return from Korea, George went to work for the City of New London water department, where he spent the next 29 years before he retired.
George spent most of his adult years very involved with the Loyal Order of Moose organization, including a reign as Supreme Governor of the New London lodge as well as holding other offices. He was very proud of the work the organization did for children.
George is survived, & will be sadly missed, by his Daughter & Son-in-Law, Sharon & Mike Alger, Stepson Rick (Judye) Davidson. Grandchildren: Michael (Mercedes) Alger, Christopher (Jennifer) Alger, Kimberly (Bill) States & 4 Great-Grandchildren: Cayden Marchinkowski, Noah Alger, Rylee Alger, & Roslynd States; his sisters, Dottie (Bill) Hobart, & Sarah (Len) Novak, as well as many nieces and nephews, and his good friend Dick Bouchard.
Some of George’s finest times always involved family and most especially his grandchildren. “Poppy” was always there when they “needed a ride to practice or game” or they “had to have him build something for them in his workshop”.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by several siblings; his sister Catherine Kieburg and brothers, Peter III & John Mercier.
Callings hours will be at Fulton & Theroux Funeral Home, Ocean Ave., New London – Thursday 4/16/15 from 5-8pm. A Mass at St. Mary’s Church, in the STONINGTON BOROUGH at 10:00am Friday, 4/17; to be immediately followed by a Burial with military honors at Riverbend Cemetery, Westerly, RI.
