

James "Jim" Flatley was born to Patrick Flatley and Elizabeth (Balsam) Flatley on 16 November 1940 in the Bronx, New York. He moved to Farmingdale, NY on Long Island. He attended St. Kilian Catholic School and Farmingdale High School and graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Jim was lucky to have a varied career. His professional work life began at Republic Aviation and later North American Aviation. In 1964 he was hired by USL/NUSL at stayed through all its variations ending as NUWC. He left NUWC when the facility moved to Newport, RI more than 30 years later. During his time at NUWC he was able to travel widely and conduct tests and trials of a variety of optical equipment on virtually every type of ship in the fleet. After leaving NUWC, Jim spent the next 20-plus years working for a series of Navy contractors ending with General Dynamics Information Technology. Jim was the consummate hands-on engineer and the hours spent at his work bench at both home and work were his happiest.
He is survived by his wife, Donna (Kindilien), his daughters: Jennifer Hasara and Carrie Husted, their spouses and his stepson, Neil Durrant. He is also survived by his much-loved grandchildren: Elizabeth Hasara and Kathrine, Curtis, and James Husted. He also has three siblings: Christine, Patrice and Neal Flatley and two nieces Jessica and Caitlin Baker.
A quiet man, Jim Is remembered and honored for his work but more importantly for his generosity and kindness. His death on 18 May after a long illness left friends and family bereft.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or to the Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
