Willie Mae Hurtt

On Aug. 7, 2018, Mrs. Willie Mae ’’Willa’’ Hurtt beloved wife of Hugh Hurtt of Groton entered into eternal rest on her 85th birthday. Born to the late William and Susie Douglas. Miss Willa Mae, as she was famously known, received her GED at OIC of New London in early 90’s, and worked several places. Starting out, she worked at Hermages Hospital Supplies in Niantic as an assembler for 26 years. She also worked at the Commissary on the Sub Base in Groton as a grocery bagger for a number of years. She volunteered at the Senior Center as well as the Soup Kitchen in New London for more than 15 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Southeastern division, and was very involved in her local church ministry at Madry Temple in New London. Known to always have hard candy in her purse at all times. Miss Willa Mae was predeceased by her only son, Ernest ‘‘Ernie’’ V. Douglas in 2008. As well as several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her Granddaughter's Opal R. Douglas and Silva Marquez. Great grandchildren Owen V. Douglas, Darion S. and George Q. Douglas, Dakari Herndon, and Jurnie Marquez. She is also survived by her sisters Carrie Horn of OH, Amelia Pryor of CA, Pearl Hinton of VA, and Sandra Pernell of NC. Brothers Rayfield Douglas of VA and Murphy Douglas of NC. She will be sorely missed by family, friends, and the community as a whole. Calling hours from 9am-11am at Madry Temple on 8/17/18 with memorial service to follow. Flowers can be sent to Madry Temple prior to the start of services. Donations can also be made in her honor at the Soup Kitchen and Senior Center of New London.
