Having worked for Al all too briefly in the U.S. Attorney's Office from 1978 to 1980, I still have vivid and fond memories of what a fine man he was. May he rest in peace and may my deepest condolences go to MJ , his family and so many friends he has left behind.

I hope this will reach Brian. When I heard that you had lost your second sibling, my heart went out to you. I know that I speak for all the Blue Jay Class of 1970 in extending you and your family our sorrow and prayers. Although I did not know Al personally, he was certainly an accomplished wonderful guy.

What a great loss this is for all who knew Al and considered him a close friend. Whether it was working with him, talking sports with him or simply having a drink and going over the events of the day, it was always a great pleasure. Al was one of a kind and to have been able to share so many wonderful and fun times with him was truly a blessing. The stories alone were worth their weight in gold. A wise philosopher once said that we are all going to wind up at that bar at the end of the universe, and those with the best stories will have the front row seats. If this is true, can any of us who knew Al doubt what row he is in? But it's not only the stories, it's also the memories. He has left us with so many wonderful memories, and through those memories, in so many ways he will always be with us. To Mary Jane and his family, you have our deepest sympathy and prayers and our thoughts are with you. To those of us who knew Al so well, the book is far from closed. In fact, it hasn't even been written yet, and maybe someone should think about that.

I will always associate the expression "Out of an abundance of caution," with you, Al.  Without reservation, however, I know your soul will rest in peace with G-d, because you always strived to do the right thing.  My deepest condolences to the Winters family.

Big Al would get more done in his 10 minute conversations with judges in the parking lot than the rest of us AUSAs would accomplish in a month in court.  A wonderful storyteller, and the most practical lawyer ever.  If you couldn't learn something from watching and listening to Al, you were just unteachable.  Rest easy, Federal Bear. I had the privledge of working with Al during the 1970s while working for DEA in New Orleans. Al was all the great things that others have said here..competent, honest, professional and was the best AUSA I have ever worked with...but maybe as important he was a good guy and was fun to work with. From the day Al interviewed me for a job i thought he was captivating and unlike anyone else I'd known then or since. He was always the "go to" guy, the one who could  fix the hairiest problems.  I have no doubt God already has Big Al working on flipping someone on the devil so he can bring him to justice. MJ- rest assured you brought Al great happiness over the many years. His larger than life persona will live on in the many lives he touched.

Big Al was the best.  An honorable man who did an important job extremely well and was never meanspirited.  They broke the mold.  I will miss him a lot.

I will never forget Al Winters. He, along with the entire team we worked with for my mother, went above and beyond to ensure that justice was served. Nothing that I can ever say will be enough for his family and friends loss. But his memory will live on through all those who have had the pleasure of having him in their life.

MJ, so sorry for your loss. Having spent more then 31 yrs. in Federal LE and working in over 1/2 dozen different Federal Districts I can say he was one of the BEST and unique AUSA's I have ever worked with. He was a pillar in the New Orleans USA's office. Some of the more interesting times spent with him were behind closed doors, he knew a lot, about a lot of people and how the system worked. Rest in Peace Big Guy!

The good people of New Orleans loved him.  The law violators feared him.  Truly a friend of all in law enforcement, he was always available to teach and counsel in his chosen craft of criminal law.  His sense of fairness and judicial temperament in the courtroom were legendary.  He was certainly an individual to be emulated by all who knew him.  On the lighter side, he had an incredible sense of humor and he was a hell of a horse handicapper.  "Big Al" will be sorely missed.  My sincere condolences go to Mary Jane.  Goodbye dear friend...

 During my career with the FBI, I never worked with a more competent, honorable and hard working AUSA than Al Winters. He set the bar very high  in our work. With Al, excellence was standard and sub-par performance was unacceptable. When you leave government service, it is people of the caliber of Al Winters that you miss the most. I will always remember him. It was a privilege to be his associate and friend. Rest in peace.

Al symbolized the dedicated hard-working AUSA.  It was my pleasure and privilege to work with him when I was an FBI Agent and later when I became an AUSA.  He always had time to help or answer a question (usually illustrated with a personal story).  God bless you Al, and grant you eternal rest in that big courtroom in the sky.

Al was a wonderful man, a great friend, and an outstanding lawyer.  He brought respect and dignity to the U.S. Attorney's Office, and set the gold standard for AUSA's to follow. Working under the leadership of John Volz and Al, or as my father called him 'The Federal Bear", was the highlight of my career. I will always be grateful for their leadership and counsel.

If there was a hall of fame for Assistant United States Attorneys, Al would be an automatic selection.  No one else ever could do it quite the way he did. His accomplishments were legendary.

Al was one of the BIG reasons I enjoyed my 22 years at the U.S. Attorney's Office.  A great raconteur and man integrity. There will never be another one like him.

Al was a wonderful man, a great lawyer, and a good friend to many. He was a leader at the U.S. Attorney's Office where I was fortunate to have worked while he was there. He set an example for those of us who were young and inexperienced. His time there will always be remembered as will he.

MJ, I am so sorry for your loss. You were the love of his life, and I know what you meant to each other. May your memories bring you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Very sad to learn of Al's passing. I haven't seen him in 40 years, but he was responsible for one of my clearest college memories. The SAK brothers would gather at Ye Olde College Inn of a weekend night. On occasion Al (Ut) and Rehm (Blit) would come in together, and in stentorian tones Ut would announce to the bartender "Me and my little brother want 10 hamburgers!" They would then proceed to consume them all.
Al was larger than life, and though I haven't seen him for years I know he will be missed terribly by family and friends.

It was an honor to work with a man who dedicated himself to the pursuit of justice and the suppression of corruption in this area. I was proud to have work with him for many years. His dedication was nonpareil to the fair enforcement of the the law. And while he may be gone from this earth, I am sure his memory will endure in those his life has touched. Rest in Peace, Al--you certainly deserve it.

Al was not only a classmate at Jesuit but during my employment with the FBI Al was always available to assist in our investigative responsibilities.Al will be missed by the Law enforcement community.

After working with Al and Mary Jane from 1980 through 1985 at the US Attorney's Office, I had the good fortune to become part of a group who met every year to talk sports, pick the Final Four and continue our friendship. From that group Al joins Jack Mulvehill,Mike Ellis, Harry Heller and John Volz in that place reserved for friends. We who remain will miss Al for his ready quip and smile and wonderful stories. Rest in Peace my friend.

Albert (Ut) was my dearest friend all through our times at Jesuit High School. He was always a wonderful and caring person. I am so very glad that I had the opportunity to have lunch with him several months ago along with some other Jesuit Classmates.
