Milford Leo Kathmann Jr., D.D.S., moved on to what he predicted would be his next and greatest adventure on the evening of July 16, 2013 ending on earth what he called “a most wonderful life, one with no regrets.” Mil deeply loved and cared for his faith, his family, his friends, his patients, his fellow co-workers. He leaves to cherish the moments they shared Ruth, his wife of 53 years; his beloved daughter Daria Chaney and her husband, his “other son” Mark; his son Erich and his wife, his “other daughter” Monica; his grandchildren Christian, Nicholas, and Ericha Chaney; his sister Elois Toepfer; his sister-in-law Rachael Plaisance; his brother-in-law Nicholas Lafranz; and numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses.
Because he was a no nonsense guy, they may not realize how much he loved them and their families and enjoyed family gatherings. Mil was a man of great strength and courage, always decisive, always ready to help family and friends, always ready for an adventure be it sailing, motorcycling, traveling back roads here and abroad. He enjoyed the LSU Tigers, Mardi Gras, revisiting his old upper ninth ward neighborhood where he once knew everyone’s name, his special dental school buddies, Louisiana seafood and Budweiser beer!
He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and Loyola University School of Dentistry, Class of 1960. He practiced the profession he loved for over 50 years, especially enjoying the friendship of his patients and staff.
Mil served as a Captain in the U. S. Army Reserves and was activated during the Berlin Crisis.
He was very active in dental organizations, serving as president of the New Orleans Dental Association; Chairman of the New Orleans Dental Conference; Secretary-Treasurer of the Louisiana Dental Association; and Alternate Delegate to the American Dental Association. He was the recipient of the New Orleans Dental Association annual Honor Dentist Award in 2001 and the Louisiana Dental Association's Distinguished Dentist Award in 2003.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home on Saturday July 20 at 1pm. Visitation will begin at 10am and continue until Mass time.
