Mirna Lourdes Alonzo Lopez was born in Comayaguela, Honduras in 1951. After arriving in New Orleans in 1961, she grew up in the Lower Garden District, and graduated from Redemptorist High School in 1969. In the late 1970 s, she began working for the Department of State Passport Agency in New Orleans where she enjoyed a distinguished 30 year career there. Never one to back down from a challenge, Mirna demonstrated her determination and exemplary work ethic by rising to the appointment of Consular Officer, which allowed her to travel extensively to numerous countries to work at the Embassies. While she was beloved by many, her lifelong companion, and once upon a time husband, Jaime, was the love of her life. Out of their love story came her second career, as Sabu, or Mami, to Lourdes Abigail and Jamina Margarita. Both of her girls grew up with deep admiration and love for her, and they will miss her terribly. Mirna was a compassionate, thoughtful soul. She didn't even have to meet you, to follow along with your daily trials and triumphs. You only had to meet one of her girls to be part of her extended family network. She never, ever met a stranger. She often gathered Christmas decorations and clothing to send back to Honduras to help out her family and friends. In the last year and a half, Mirna embarked on her most thrilling career, as Bela to Miguel Santos Valencia, her firstborn grandson. He was the apple of her eye, and she his. On October 1, 2013, she embarked on a new chapter, where she can watch over us all, both her beloved family, and her extended network of friends. We are all lucky to have known her. The family invites relatives and friends to a visitation Saturday, October 12th beginning at 1:30 pm followed with a Memorial Mass at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans.
