

Sister Mary Colette Philips, O.P., a Dominican Sister of Peace, age 82 years and in her 55th year of religious profession, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 6:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center (New Orleans, LA). Sister was born Ruth Mary Philips on June 28, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana, daughter of the late Dudley A. Philips, Sr. and Jeanne Guerineau Philips, sister of the late Dudley A. Philips, Jr., Marion P. Larkin, Dan Philips, Sr., Frederick Philips, Harry Philips, Roy Philips, Lee Philips, and Alvin Philips, and survived by nieces and nephews. She entered the Novitiate of the former St. Mary’s Dominican Sisters in New Orleans, Louisiana, and made her profession of vows on June 15, 1957.
Sister Mary Colette earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) with a major in Psychology, a Bachelor of Science degree from the former St. Mary’s Dominican College (New Orleans) with a major in Education, and a Master of Art from Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, WI) with a major in Special Education. Sister Mary Colette taught in Dominican schools in New Orleans, and other parishes in Louisiana and in the Archdiocesan Special Education School, St. Michael. Over the years she also served in a number of administrative and consultative roles for her former Congregation and ministries. Sister thanked God for her Dominican vocation and the many blessings of her ministries; in particular her “Camelot” years at St. Coletta in Jefferson, Wisconsin and St. Michael Special School in New Orleans with their mission of serving the child with developmental disabilities and other challenges.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the DOMINICAN SISTERS OF PEACE MOTHERHOUSE CHAPEL, 580 BROADWAY, NEW ORLEANS, LA on Friday,
July 29, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment in the Dominican Sisters of Peace Cemetery in Rosaryville, Ponchatoula, Louisiana. A prayer service will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011
at 4:00 p.m. in the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until Mass time. In lieu of
