

She was born to Gertrude Schlesinger and Alfred Keith on July 11, 1921 in New Orleans. Except for a
short period of time that she lived in Seattle, she lived her entire life in New Orleans. She was a devout
Catholic her whole life and regularly did the Stations of the Cross for many years and recited many
rosaries on a daily basis. She was the caregiver for many of her elderly relatives and in-laws. She joins
her loving husband of 65 years Kenneth O. McElrath, in heaven and is the loving mother of MaryAnn
Ballero (Johnny), Betty McElrath, Janie Heitz (Carl), Ken McElrath, Jr. (Beverly), Teresa Gray (Richie),
Keith McElrath (Lisa) and Trudy Bordelon (David). Grandmother of Frank Ballero, Nikki Ballero, Jessica,
Casey and Jenna Heitz, Caitlin and Devin McElrath, Rich, Rob and Ryan Gray, Sean, Heather Harmon and
Chris McElrath, Jenny, Dave, Steven and Joseph Bordelon. Great grandmother of seven. Verna created a loving and warm home for her family and countless friends. She was a wonderful cook, but was famous for her baking, especially chocolate chip cookies, sesame seed cookies and pineapple upside down cakes. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the efforts of Pat Cassidy, Eucharistic Minister who visited her regularly for years and brought her communion, Fr. David Dufour, Fr. Jeffrey Montz, and also Gina and the entire staff of Notre Dame Hospice who provided much appreciated support. Family and friends are invited to the visitation Sunday night beginning at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans. On Monday the family will receive friends at Divine Mercy Parish (formerly Nativity of Our Lord) at 3325 Loyola Drive, Kenner beginning at 11:00 followed with a Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon.
