

BRAVERMAN--Albert Stuart, age 88, beloved husband of Daisy, father of Alice Swenson (Paul) and Michael (Amber), grandfather of Rachel, Charlotte and Leon. Brother of Richard. Graduate of Stuyvesant, Columbia College (BA) University of Pittsburgh M.D. Boarded in Hematology and among the first to be boarded in Oncology. Did research and published on Thalassemia and Sickle Cell early in his career, followed by extensive research and published on breast cancer. As a physician, he treated hundreds of patients, some of whom travelled from other countries, insisting on being treated by him only. Professor of Medicine at Downstate Medical Center for more than 40 years, retiring in 2020. Admired and respected by his students and fellows, maintaining close relationships with many of them. An avid reader of not only medical literature, but also science, history, and literature, he published several articles on Thomas Mann. Keenly aware of injustice, as a young man he participated in the Voter Registration movement in the South. While serving in the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C., he was politically active, denouncing the Vietnam War on national television in uniform as the ranking member of a group of concerned officers. He later testified for the defense in the trial of the Chicago Seven. He also ran the Free Clinic, addressing the needs of women and young people.
