It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alice Kaplan. She died very unexpectedly after a short illness at the age of 88.
Alice was born in NYC and raised in Woodmere, Long Island. She attended Lawrence High School and Smith College, from which she graduated in 1958. She married Allan Kaplan in 1956. They had three children: Seth, Isabel and Caroline. They shared a passion for art and began a collection that they developed together for almost 50 years.
When Caroline was 8, Alice went back to school and got a Masters of Library Science. Her first job was as a librarian at Friends Academy for 9 years. She then became a librarian at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. This job was the beginning of a long relationship with Planned Parenthood including many years of board membership of the Long Island affiliate.
For a change of pace, in the mid-eighties Alice built a small antiques business called Alice Kaplan Antiques which specialized in sterling silver frames, objects and serving utensils. While working in this business she was also volunteering in the health center of the same local Planned Parenthood affiliate. Her experience there motivated her to acquire a Masters of Social Work.
Alice then devoted herself to serving as a bereavement counselor at an organization in Greenwich, CT called the Den for Grieving Children. There she supported families who had experienced a death, including several groups with families who had lost a parent in the 9-11 attacks.
Alice married Jason Aronson five years after Allan died. They enjoyed an active life in the city. She took advantage of many cultural opportunities and had a very busy social life. Her bridge group in Greenwich met for decades as did her book club. It wasn’t easy to get on her calendar! She had many friends and family members who loved her deeply. Her generosity and interest in others were boundless. She was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many people.
She is survived by her husband, Jason Aronson; her brother Steven Drucker; her children, Seth, Isabel and Caroline Kaplan; her grandchildren Jason and Abigail Cheskis, Justin Kaplan and Jack and Joshua Clark; sons-in-law Andrew Cheskis and Douglas Clark; and daughter-in-law Amy Fitzgerald.
