
Backar, Andre O., 95 passed away peacefully at home on May 17, 2017. He was born December 04, 1921. A man for whom the terms “Joie de Vivre” and “bon vivant” were invented. He loved his country, New York City, the good life, the ladies and most of all his two children and two grandsons. A true egalitarian, kings and waiters were treated as friends, inspiring love, loyalty and admiration in many. Called “the mayor of Madison Avenue by the New York Times, He was a familiar figure at outdoor cafes with his Rolls Royce parked by the curb. He had an illustrious career in finance including Lehman Brothers, Crane and Company, EF Hutton and Bear, Stearns and Company. Predeceased by his first wife, Simone, the mother of his 2 children and his second wife, Heather, he leaves his son Zachary of New York City, his daughter Janet Backar Papi of Aix on Provence-France, as well as two grandsons, Andre Papi and Travis Backar. Funeral from Frank E. Campbell “The Funeral Chapel” 1076 Madison Ave. (81stSt.) Family and friends will be receiving on Monday 2-4 and 5-7 pm. Funeral Tuesday at 11am. Interment to follow St. Michael Cemetery (Astoria, Queens).
