Angelo R. Zingone – beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend died peacefully surrounded by his family on January 27th in New York City at the age of 88. Angelo encountered various medical hurdles in his later years but demonstrated incredible strength and resilience in overcoming them.
Born in 1938 to Raffaele and Rosa Zingone, Angelo was the eldest of five children. He was born on the Amalfi Coast of Italy and emigrated to New York with his father in his late teenage years. They earned enough money for his mother and siblings to join the extended family already living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where Angelo resided until his death. Their history in New York is one of sacrifice, hard work, and perseverance. Making a better life for family, guided by faith, was always their north star – a familiar tale in the American immigrant experience.
Upon arriving in America in the mid-1950s, Angelo went to work in his uncles’ and cousins’ grocery store, Zingone Brothers, on Columbus Avenue. Zingone Brothers continues today as a 100-year-old institution where customers are treated like family. His tireless work ethic and dedication contributed to the store’s long tradition of being a key part of the local neighborhood community. Angelo worked at Zingone’s his entire adult life until retirement, but he frequently took the short walk back to see family, customers, and friends. From his vantage point on Columbus Avenue, Angelo had a front row seat to the transformation of the Upper West Side over the decades. He will be deeply missed by his cousins at Zingone Brothers and their long-time customers.
In the mid-1960s, Angelo returned to his hometown in Italy to marry Maria, who had never previously been to the US. Together, they settled and started a family on the West Side. They moved into a walk-up apartment one floor above Angelo’s sister, Anna, and her family, intertwining their two families’ experiences. It was here they raised their children, Rosa and Raffaele. Maria was Angelo’s constant companion, especially at his medical appointments and she resolutely enforced his doctors’ orders. Angelo celebrated over 60 happy years of matrimony with Maria, enjoyed watching their family grow and benefit from their shared sacrifices. He adored his grandchildren and was proud to witness all their successes.
Upon retirement, Angelo enjoyed long walks around Central Park and the reservoir, often checking in on Zingone Brothers on his way home. Returning to his hometown in Italy for long vacations was his favorite pastime. There, he enjoyed his town’s beach, walking down to it and the long climb back up – a feat aided by years of living in a New York walk-up apartment. In Italy, Angelo relished fishing for squid out into the sea late at night (much to his wife’s anxiety), applying his experience to his nephews’ grocery store, and socializing with his family and other “en pensione” friends there.
Angelo is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Anna Cafuoco; his younger brothers, Giuseppe (Joseph) and Gennaro (Charlie); and his daughter-in-law, Kristine. He is survived by his wife, Maria; daughter, Rosa Scalzo (Michael); son, Ralph; and his grandchildren, Marianna and Joseph Zingone, and William and Grace Scalzo. Angelo is also survived by his sister, Rachele Accardi, and his many nieces and nephews in the US and in Italy.
