Arnie Stephen Mazer—never Arnold—died on July 4th at the age of 70.
Born on June 6, 1956, in Buffalo, New York, he was the youngest child and only son of Bill and Dora (Dutch) Mazer. Cherished by his older sisters, Fran and Bev, he became affectionately known as the family's "Little Devil" during their annual pilgrimages to the Buffalo Bisons' spring training in Florida, where his boundless energy left a memorable impression on more than a few motel owners. After the family moved to Scarsdale, NY, in 1964, Arnie discovered two lifelong passions: lacrosse and the performing arts. At Hobart College, he played for the Statesmen lacrosse team and wrote his senior thesis on Lawrence of Arabia—two pursuits that would shape the course of his life. He remained devoted to the game for decades and would likely have continued playing had his knees permitted.
Drawn by curiosity and adventure, Arnie traveled widely and made Aliyah, living for a time in Tel Aviv. Yet New York City always remained home, particularly his beloved apartment at the Gloucester. Over a career spanning decades, Arnie worked as an actor, writer, and producer, contributing to nearly every corner of the entertainment industry. His work encompassed radio, print journalism, voice acting, television, film, and the stage. Most recently, he appeared in Women Who Cut, while continuing preparations on a monologue from King Lear and developing the documentary State of Dispute. Arnie is survived by his sister, Fran Siegel; his brother-in-law, Henry Siegel; his niece, Nadja Raver; his nephew, Jacob Raver; and his great-nephews, Ben and Eli. He also leaves behind a wide circle of neighbors, fellow lacrosse players, collaborators on stage and behind the scenes, and lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by his wit, generosity, and enduring enthusiasm. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, creative spirit, fierce loyalty, and the joy he brought to those who knew him. We love you Arnie and will miss you forever.
