the eisenhower years are often presented as a vast and barren cultural wateland, and yet..here was a time when musical interpreters like marian mcpartland, enroll garner--and yes--barbara carroll--were at a peak, serenading us with some of their most moving and exciting work on the keyboard.
ms.carroll had such a brittle and succinct style, no extraneousness--and yet--she could convey a warmth and sense of ticklish mischief along with her undeniable musicality, wit, and sophistication.
in our current era of musical noise bordering on total chaos, so often coupled with unfortunate language and a raw and blatant sexuality, how wistful to recall a serious, so-skilled artist of ms. carroll's caliber.
and then, late in her long career, came the truly wonderful VOICE: the subtly soulful, scintillating words of a porter or sondheim; glancing and kittenish, but as frequently rueful and touching enough to wipe away a tear.
in all, so much loveliness to miss.

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Barbara about 10 years ago as her physical therapist. I believe she did me more good than I did her. I got to experience her music and her jubilant personality. What a wonderful lady she was! Her story is an inspiration to me. My condolences to her husband Mark, who she spoke of with such adoration, and her daughter and grandchildren.

I had the great fortune to work with Ms. Carroll several times as the technical director at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center. She was a powerhouse on the piano and will be greatly missed. RIP Sweet Barbara. I am so glad to have experienced your music and your wonderfully sweet personality.
