Barbara Segal Knapp
Passed away on December 3, 2018
With sadness, the family of Barbara Segal Knapp announces her passing Monday at age 90.
A Manhattan native, Mrs. Knapp received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence and M.A. from Columbia. She became a prize-winning early childhood educator at NYC Public Schools and worked at the International Center for the Disabled and the League of Hard of Hearing, pioneering efforts to integrate disabled adults into the workplace. Growing up on West 86th Street, she was an unbeatable Jacks player. A tall, athletic lefty, she also became a top amateur tennis competitor. Mrs. Knapp was known to be fun, caring, broadly read, and stylish. An avid street photographer of Central Park and subway riders, she developed and printed memorable black and white images in her dark room. Her father, Louis Segal, founded and was president of Segal Lock Co., whose deadbolt locks can still be found in apartments across New York City. The wife of Burton L. Knapp (deceased), she is survived by her children: Richard (Susan Korytkowski), William (Jean Milbauer) and Elizabeth, and grandchildren: Jackson, Michael, Samantha, Eli, Isaac, Bryan, and Alexandra. A memorial service is planned for Spring 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to NYC's Fresh Air Fund.
