Carl cared, he really did. As a professor in grad school, his ruminations about media and art were--before and after--unique, insightful and heartfelt. One moment he might be characterizing the use of a stabilo "all" pencil like drawing with tar or reveling in the sound a student's offering evoked in his mind. Then he'd pivot to good Italian food or the endless lore of Mott street and the curio shops that could be found there. His class met in the streets, subways and corner dim sum shops, each a deliberate act of facilitation, pulling back the veil on things we would have missed and shouldn't. His kindness, respectful regard for students and willingness to share that is my memory of Carl. After graduation, I attended an opening he had. Walls were filled with wonderful small works, table top sculptures too. He was in his element, being with people, laughing, talking of art, food and music. This was the last time I saw Carl prior to his passing, it is also how I choose to hold him in my memory, in gratitude for what he imparted to me.  May God keep you Carl, you made a difference and that is rare indeed.

Carl was a wonderful teacher. He was a terrific storyteller. A mind of a true artist. He was a truly unique and wonderful person. His creative spirit inspired me.

Carl was definitely one of a kind and was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and being in his company . He was a beautiful person inside and out and will forever be missed. We love you Carl.

The most honorable man know. Ive never respected a man in a way that I felt for Carl. A wise man, an amazing artist, a kind professor. For people who knows me, I was never an ART student, yet he was the one who opened up a new world for me and inspired me in a way that nobody else could.

Carl Titolo, was not only an outstanding teacher. He had a wonderful humorous personality. He was bigger then life. He helped so many students. He will be well missed. School of Visual Arts lost a wonderful teacher.
