A lifetime philanthropist and partner in life of seventy years to husband Bernard R. Kossar who predeceased her on April 10, 2024, passed away peacefully at the age of ninety-three on June 11, 2026. Carol Karetzky Kossar, devoted mother of Stephanie Kossar Stuart and Valerie Lise Kossar, cherished grandmother of Michael James Kossar and Ariana Kossar Stuart (Cohn), proud great grandmother of Blaine Monroe Kossar, Cashius Joseph Kossar, Juliette Kossar Cohn, and Barron Kossar Cohn, her sisters-in-law Sandra Blau, Gloria Scheinin, Patricia Karetzky, a special and close nephew Dr. Scott Scheinin, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Monroe Karetzky.
After graduating Syracuse University in 1953 with a B.A. degree in journalism, she married her college sweetheart Bernard and worked as a social worker in Syracuse until 1955 when he graduated Syracuse law school. From there it was a lifetime journey beginning in the Marine Corps in Camp Lejeune and then off to his first law firm and onward through his long retail career which culminated in the founding of Millenium Partners, L.P., an investment fund which their grandson Michael Kossar continues to grow today with the same passion his grandfather had.
Carol and Bernard were dedicated philanthropists channeling resources to meaningful causes at Syracuse University, Israel, and beyond. Their generosity extended to the Tel Aviv Foundation where they built the Kossar-Karetzky Park and the Kossar-Karetzky Senior Center as well as numerous kindergartens and bomb shelters in schools. A testament to improving the lives of others. At Syracuse, Carol served on the board of Arts and Sciences for many years. Carol found immense joy and fulfillment in giving back - much like her earlier days as a social worker. Carol Kossar was extremely well read and will be deeply missed for her intelligence, vast knowledge on numerous topics, and unwavering generosity. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Committee of the Tel Aviv Foundation: P.O. Box 1433, 223 West 38th Street, New York, NY 10018.
Funeral services will be Thursday June 18, 2026 10:30 am at Temple Emanu-El Fifth Avenue at 65th Street.
