Dr. Charles Robb Steinberg, distinguished physician, has died at the age of 86 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Charles, known to all as Chuck, was born and raised in New York City by his father, Israel (Gus) Steinberg—also a distinguished physician—and his mother, Evelyn Marie Scheile. He attended Horace Mann High School before graduating from Brown University; Charles then earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical College. There, he served as Chief Medical Resident before going on to complete his fellowship in infectious diseases.
Chuck would continue to practice internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he established himself for over 50 years as a brilliant diagnostician, a beloved and inspiring professor, and a warm, compassionate caregiver. He was respected and loved by students and patients alike for his charm and humor alongside his dedication to the science and art of medicine. His commitment to medical education and patient care left an indelible mark on the New York medical community and the young doctors who carry his lessons with them.
Chuck’s life was defined by service to his country as well as his craft. During the Vietnam War he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps, 9th Division; he was stationed with the Riverines, a unit of river boats that provided front-line care to soldiers fighting along the Mekong Delta. Though he returned having faced the hardships of war, Chuck often spoke of and emphasized the bonds that formed among people of disparate backgrounds under trying circumstances. He would similarly strive to treat all whom he encountered with equity and respect.
Medicine was his professional passion, but Chuck had other loves: running, fishing and a family he adored. He is survived by Judith Lambert, the love of his life, and his daughters Carolyn Robb Steinberg MD, married to Hearn Cho MD/PhD, and film producer Christina Steinberg married to Scott Mattingly Esq. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Lulu, Olivia, Coltrane and Griffin. He was proud of them all and they will always remember his silly jokes and his laughter!
A memorial service for Charles will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Frank E. Campbell - The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave, New York, New York 10028.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles' memory may be made to Charles R Steinberg, MD Scholarship at Weill Cornell Medical College. You may contact Lucille M. Ferraro at [email protected] for any assistance or questions.
