Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 14th, 1952, Dan was the firstborn child of Joseph and Nella González. The family emigrated to Miami, Florida in 1960, and moved to NYC in 1964. One year later, he proudly gained acceptance to Regis High School, one of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions. Regis would have a profound impact on his life: it was a place where he would forge lifelong friendships, set long-standing track team records, and receive academic distinction as one of 39 National Merit finalists, and one of 7 winners, in his class. He received a B.A. in 1974, and later an MBA, both from Columbia University.
Dan married his high school sweetheart, Muriel Flynn González, in 1974, and then began his career at Time Inc., quickly working his way up to Distribution & Circulation Manager for Latin America. He later held positions at Simon & Schuster and Family Media, before successfully branching out on his own as a consultant.
Publishing was his craft, but running was his passion. He completed 59 marathons (35 of which were the Boston Marathon, most notably in 1981 when he ran his personal best of 2:27:00, and in 2013) and ran every single day for 45 years straight, with few exceptions.
One time, upon arriving in Puerto Rico on a business trip, Dan learned from his driver that the town would be hosting a marathon later that day. Dan skipped lunch to run in the marathon and finished in first place. Another time, Muriel received a call from Dan’s mother Nella, wondering how he had done earlier in the day at the NYC Marathon. Muriel’s reply: “He did great, and can tell you all about it after he returns from his night-time jog, in 60-90 minutes.”
Dan was a marathoner, a classical music lover, a theatre goer, rabid fan of soccer (Argentina and Club Atletico Independiente) and the Yankees. He was a track and field enthusiast, a beach runner, a Malbec lover, a student of Spanish language literature, a recycler, a composter, and a proud husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man with many interests, disciplined and tough to the very end.
Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife Muriel, his daughter Nora, his son David, his daughter-in-law Gabby, and his grandson Alex. He rarely missed a family outing with his parents, Joseph and Nella (predeceased), his siblings, Liliana (Billy), Rosana (Paul), and Joe (Leila); and his many nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
