Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Denise lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and the arts. She was the beloved wife of Dr. Jung J. Hwan, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. They immigrated from Taiwan to the United States after college, and they were married in Princeton, New Jersey. Together they raised three children—Dr. Warden H. Hwan (married to Eleanor Hsu Hwan), Peggy Hwan Hebard (married to George (Geordie) Whiting Hebard III), and Dr. Peter H. Hwan (married to Kate Main Hwan). They were blessed with nine cherished grandchildren (Abigail, Melanie, Zachary, Carter, Hadley, Avery, Paige, Taylor, and Colin), all of whom brought her immense joy. Since Dr. Hwan’s retirement, they split their time between New York City and Clarks Summit.
A proud alumna of Taiwan National University, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious university, Denise later earned her master’s degree in Library Science from the City University of New York. She worked in her husband’s solo obstetrics and gynecology practice in Clarks Summit, touching countless lives.
Denise was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarks Summit, where she served as a deacon and sang in the church chorus. Her faith was central to her life.
She loved the arts deeply—painting, especially on ceramic dining ware, and music. From her childhood piano lessons to her more recent harp studies, she found joy in creativity and expression. She was also an amazing cook. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family, particularly her nine grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Denise’s legacy is one of love, faith, and artistry. She will be remembered for her strong will, her wit, and her devotion to family.
