Doriane Lazare (née Kurz) died peacefully on March 21, 2021 surrounded by family. Born on October 18, 1927 in Trieste Italy, Doriane considered herself Italian, but the arrival of World War II forced her and her extended family to avoid the Nazis by journeying to Southern France where she spent much of her adolescence.
Doriane ultimately immigrated to the United States in 1942. A lover of learning, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from New York University and continued to take classes throughout her life. Doriane joined the United Nations in its infancy and had a marvelous career there as an Editor. Her curiosity about the world was satisfied by the many books she read, the arts she supported, and the lives she touched. A citizen of the United States for over 70 years, Doriane maintained a strong connection with Europe through her Mitteleuropa accent and her appreciation of European culture.
Doriane had a special gift for friendship— she forged enduring bonds due to her curiosity about people and a deep appreciation of her friends' best qualities. Simply put, to know Doriane was to love her and she returned that love with great enthusiasm.
A woman of immense style and substance, Doriane’s wit and warmth will be cherished by friends and family around the globe. She found her soulmate in her late husband Paul Lazare with whom she shared a passion for travel, laughter, and love.
Adored mother of Sasha and Kim Grutman, Nila Fortune, and stepdaughter Nicki McDonald and proud "Baba” to grandchildren Aurora, Lola, and Judah, Doriane made each of them feel that they could conquer the world. She is also survived by her devoted brother Edward Kurz and his wife Marilyn. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
An online celebration of her life will occur later this Spring.
