She is survived by her children: Mitzi Gilbert (married to Ken), Hank Steinberg (married to Liz), Steve Steinberg (married to Lori), Alan Kossoff (married to Debbie), Evan Kossoff (married to Diane) and Tom Kossoff (married to Colleen). She was the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren: Rachael (married to Daniel), Sam, Hannah (married to Jon), Becky (married to Matt), Andre, Scott (married to Mai), Casey, Ben, Kim, Adam (married to Jen), and Eric (married to Sahina). She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Abe, Eve, Miri, Lainey, Gemma and Beau. She is also survived by her sister, Esty Goldberg of Webster, NY.
Edith was born in the Bronx, NY to Betty Bernstein and Henry Wiener on July 5, 1934. She spent much of her early years living with her grandparents, Joseph and Celia Bernstein, who spoke only Yiddish. Her mother, Betty Wiener, worked in sales at Alexander's department store. Betty later married Harry Berfas, and together they had Esty, Edith’s beloved sister.
At 18, Edie married Gerry Steinberg, a member of the Army Corps of Engineers. Their life together began in NY and shortly thereafter moved to France, where their first child, Mitzi, was born. They later settled in Long Island, NY, where Hank and Steve were born. Over the years, the family moved frequently — living in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Germany (Baumholder, Munich, Frankfurt), and New York. Edith and Gerry divorced in 1974.
In 1974, Edie met Ira Kossoff, who became a cherished part of her life. With love and grace, they blended their families and built a life together in Fort Lee, NJ, and later in Boca Raton, Florida. After Ira’s passing, Edie moved to Linden Ponds.
Edie had a deep appreciation for fine art, films, and nurturing her exquisite orchids. But above all, her greatest joy came from her family. She adored and respected each member and was known affectionately by many names: Edie Wienie, Your Mother, Mom, Mutti, Nanny, Grammy, and Grandma.
She will be dearly missed, remembered always for her warmth, devotion, sweetness and love for her family.
A celebration of Edie's life will be held on July 6th at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan, followed by a burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, New York.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in Edith’s name may be made to the Linden Ponds Jewish Community, Attention: RubyLee Shuman, 301 Linden Ponds Way, Unit 611, Hingham, MA 02043
