Emma E. Real, 99, passed away on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022, at her home on 109th St in the Upper West Side surrounded by loved ones. Emma was a true New Yorker through and through, although she was born on December 2nd, 1922, in Babahoyo, Ecuador, she firmly believed that New York was and is the greatest city on earth. After her husband’s passing in 1972, she immigrated to New York where she proudly lived out the rest of her life and never remarried. Emma was a staple in her community and church if you didn’t see her taking home plants from off the street you could find her at her favorite window spot at McDonald’s chatting with friends and watching the city streets bustle by. Emma was an amazing cook and loved to make food for her loved ones. She would often host dance parties and other functions in their apartment where the salsa music would play, and friends and neighbors would fill up on her glorious cooking and dance the night away.
Emma’s greatest achievement in life was her family. She was blessed with 9 children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who she adored and whose lives were her greatest joy. She is survived by her 9 children, Lola, Rodolfo (Ketty), Wilson (Elizabeth), Hugo (Keto), Julio (Cecilia), Elsa, Manuel (Bella), Betty (Tim), Eduardo, and too many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren to count. She will be dearly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know her in this life. While we mourn her passing, we are joyous that she is finally reunited with her beloved husband and comforted knowing she will live on forever in our hearts. God be with you until we meet again Mama Emma, and until then te queremos para siempre.
