George Zaharia was born on March 25, 1952 in Galati, Romania and passed peacefully on June 22, 2026 at his home in Queens, New York. George was a beloved husband, brother, uncle, friend, and celebrated athlete, and lived a life marked by courage, determination, and an unwavering pursuit of freedom.
He was one of Romania’s most accomplished long-distance runners, earning distinction as a National, Balkan, and European Champion. Known for his discipline, integrity, and relentless work ethic, George dedicated himself to excellence both on and off the track.
In May 1986, while representing Romania’s National Track and Field Team at the Paris Marathon, George made a decision that would forever change the course of his life. The evening before the race, George quietly left his team carrying only a few personal belongings and went to the French embassy to defect. Six months later, he arrived in the United States, where he built a new life founded on the values he cherished most: liberty, perseverance, and opportunity.
Those who knew George remember not only his remarkable athletic achievements but also his generosity, humility, strength of character, and unwavering loyalty to family and friends. He inspired others not simply through his accomplishments, but through the way he lived—with dignity, courage, and grace.
George is survived by his beloved wife of more than 28 years, Natalia, his sisters Jenny, Tincuta, Marioara, and Geta, his nieces and nephews, his extended family and countless colleagues and friends.
George’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the obstacles he overcame, the freedom he courageously pursued, and the inspiration he provided to all who knew him. He was, in every sense of the word, a true champion. May he rest in peace.
We invite our family and friends to join us as we honor his life, celebrate the beautiful moments we shared, and say our final goodbye.
