After a long and happy life filled with faith and family and laughter and music, Geraldine R. Murphy (née Perrone) passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2025. She was 97. Gerry had a joyful, loving spirit and was filled with gratitude for life and all it had given her. She left an impact on many - people who knew her forever and some she just met.
She lived the last six years of her life with her daughter on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. A proud native New Yorker, she never missed the opportunity to let people know that she hailed from her beloved Astoria, with summers spent in the Rockaways. While she enjoyed every moment, those were among the happiest times of her life.
She was a loving mother and a grandmother and beloved aunt who was the last surviving member of her generation of a close-knit Irish-Italian family. She was a Catholic and secular Franciscan, committed to social justice.
Gerry was predeceased by her parents Helen and Benjamin Perrone and her husband John (Jack) Murphy who she married in 1960 and with whom she built a wonderful life in Smithtown, NY. She had two sisters who also died before her, Helen Reilly and her beloved “not quite twin” and best friend, Virginia Loscalzo.
She is survived by her daughter Eileen Murphy of Manhattan, son Thomas Murphy and daughter-in-law Sabine Murphy of Crofton, Maryland and three grandchildren, Annkrisitine, Anders and Christopher, all of Maryland. She is also survived by many much loved nieces and nephews and friends, new and old.
She was an animal lover and her granddogs brought her a tremendous amount of joy - Teddy who died last year and Mabel and Willie who are very much alive and miss their grandma already.
Gerry was cared for in the last years of her life by extraordinary women, none more important than the kind and loving Fatou and the wonderful Marie Maude Day, who became her closest confidant and friend. Caregivers do the Lord’s work and deserve all of our respect and admiration.
A viewing will be held at Frank E Campbell, The Funeral Chapel on Wednesday January 7th, 2026 from 3-7PM with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ignatius Loyola Thursday January 8th, at 9:30AM and interment at St. James Episcopal Cemetery on Long Island.
