Obituary
Gregory Anthony Brown was born on November 27, 1954 to James and Ruby in Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. He had three sisters. This was great for him as a child because he received so much love and affection from his mom, Ruby, and his sisters. Eventually, he became big brother to his younger sister, Debbie, and took on the role of protector. As he grew older he spent time with his father, James (deceased) and his uncles whom he was always happy to be around.
The 60’s were a confusing time for everyone, especially black people, and Gregory joined a few organizations as he searched for his identity as a young black man. Some groups allowed him to express his militant side. Others were more in keeping with his personality and upbringing. So, at age 16, he joined UPWARD BOUND, an organization dedicated to helping young people grow into adulthood.
While there, his ability for public speaking was formed. He was asked by his mentor, Mr. Pruitt, to stand in for someone. Without a prepared speech, Gregory stepped up on the stage and completely charmed the audience. He remained with the organization throughout his life and touched many lives of those who followed him.
Gregory was an excellent student. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School, he attended Fordham University and John Jay School of Criminal Justice. He had a great interest in law and the legal system, but illness and physical limitations prevented him from pursuing such an active career.
Gregory was smart and funny. He loved to laugh and had a personality that made friends quickly. Friends from childhood remained so until the end. He was creative and loved learning. He could take apart a computer and put it back together with his own ingenuity.
Besides all this, Gregory was a man of great faith, respected all religions, and treasured his Bible all of his life.
Gregory was a major part of his family’s life and all of his friends, old and new. There are no words to express the sadness of all he left behind.
Passing before him was his mother, Ruby Brown, his sister Patricia Brown, his brothers-in-law, Charles Waxman and Lawrence Gaskins, Sr. He leaves to mourn his sisters, Linda Waxman, Gloria Tynes and her husband, George Tynes, and Debbie Gaskins, all of New York. Aunts Jean Gee, Delores Render and Gloria Phillips; Uncle-in-law Albert Phillips, all of Virginia. Nieces, Lynette (Kim), Kelly and Amanda-Ruby; nephews, Mark, Derek and Lawrence Gaskins Jr.; a number of grandnieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Among the friends, one closest and dearest, Ms. Sharon Tate.
Gregory Anthony Brown will be cherished and missed by all.
