sister, mother-in-law, grandmother, and cherished friend to many, Hana Goldstein. Born in
Brno, Czechoslovakia on December 1, 1941, Hana overcame a challenging childhood
shadowed by the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia and followed, some years later, by the
Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia. This forced her family to seek temporary haven in
England and ultimately to immigrate to Sydney, Australia in 1952 where Hana flourished as a
young woman. Her marriage to Dr. Gideon Goldstein precipitated a new chapter in her life.
Gideon’s two year Fellowship as a research doctor at the NIH brought them to America, and
they never looked back. Hana was elegance personified both in her appearance and in her
manner of speech. Extremely talented as an interior designer, Hana undertook a successful
career in the field, with clients throughout the country. She had great flair as a gracious hostess
and her homes in Short Hills, NJ and East Hampton, NY were always open to guests. Hana
loved all of the arts, attending opera, theater and concerts regularly. She served as a longtime
docent of The Newark Museum of Art. Her travels were legendary. She savored good books
and was a member of two Book Groups, one in New Jersey and later on in Manhattan after she
moved to the city. She came to deeply love her adopted country, America, and would engage
in serious discussion about its politics and the future of its democracy. With all of Hana’s
unique gifts, her greatest accomplishments were as a proud and loving wife of Gideon, adoring
mother of Dov and Melissa, supportive mother-in-law to Jen and David, and smitten grandma
to Maddy, Andrew, Emma and Hadley. We will all miss her terribly going forward. May her
memory be for a blessing….
