Hazel Soriano Remolacio was born on October 6, 1975, in Manila, Philippines. At age two, she moved with her family to Montreal, and at age four, she immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City.
Brilliant, gorgeous, and graceful, Hazel lived a life of beauty and purpose. She grew up on New York City’s Upper East Side, immersed in a cosmopolitan mix of cultures and communities that shaped her sophisticated worldview. Hazel loved classic rock and folk, but could just as easily be spotted nodding her head to hip hop when the spirit moved her. She attended the St. Ignatius Loyola School, where she excelled from kindergarten through eighth grade. Hazel then joined The Spence School’s class of 1993, for high school. There, she discovered and nurtured a passion for photography and art. Hazel’s effortless style, laugh-out-loud humor, and empathy made her a standout in her class. In 1997, she graduated from Boston University, majoring in Psychology.
Hazel built a career in C-suite executive support, combining strong project management skills with a commitment to helping leaders achieve ambitious goals in finance and private equity. Off the clock, she found peace and connection through Jivamukti Yoga, forging a practice that spanned decades and gave her the flexibility, discipline, and focus of a true adept. Hazel formed many deep friendships within the Jivamukti community, leading to her union with Jonas Sigle. After marrying in 2015, they welcomed the birth of their beloved son, Julian, in 2016.
Motherhood transformed Hazel and filled her with joy. She adored Julian and poured herself into him, lovingly introducing him to their shared Filipino culture and heritage. She hosted parties and sleepovers and traveled to Upstate New York and the Philippines for trips that bolstered Julian’s outdoor enjoyment and family connection. Motherhood also deepened Hazel’s bond with her own mother, Lorna. Through this experience, Hazel came to fully understand Lorna’s strength and sacrifices as Hazel balanced her career and family. Their daily connection, and the love and mutual support was enriched as they nurtured Julian’s growth.
Hazel’s joie de vivre and irrepressible spirit never wavered, even in the face of life’s challenges including the loss of her father. As a cherished friend, she could always be counted on for an encouraging ear or a helping hand, regardless of her own circumstances. In her free time, Hazel focused on planning for her son’s future, working on personal growth, and inspiring others with her sanguine, witty outlook on life.
On January 12, Hazel passed suddenly at the age of 50. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her mother, Lorna Remolacio and her son, Julian, along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Eliseo Remolacio.
To the many people lucky enough to have known and loved her, Hazel’s beautiful smile and full-throated laughter will remain in our hearts forever. Her spirit endures in the many lives she touched, the memories she helped create, and, most of all, in the wonder of her son, Julian, whom she loved so dearly.
