My dearest Helena:
You came into my life talking by a pool in Cartagena, Colombia, on December 7th 1983.
You met my family in Bogota, during our Easter break in 1984.
We shared a tinny apartment starting on September 10 of the same  
year. Today I could have been a proud father of a 30 year old kid. The only one I wish I could have had. At that time you told me we have a little angel watching over us. Now they have met. Now I  have two angels watching over me together with my mother, father, brother and some of my sisters...
The memory of our love will be preserved by means of The Helena Steiner Charity Foundation. You will always live in my heart.

Helena was not only my good friend and neighbor for the last several decades, but one of the most good-hearted people I've ever met.  Her actions bespoke a true Christian faith and ethos, and I am sure she's enjoying her reward with Jesus Christ as I write this.  Her goodness will remain alive as long as those who knew her walk this earth.

There's no word that can express how stunned and sorry we are to hear about the death of our very dear friend Helena Steiner. We  still can't believe that it really happened.She was a true friend, dependable, kind and always hospitable.  Her generous heart was so large and had space for everyone who knew her. I personally had the wonderful experience of knowing Helen, that  I always had a shoulder to cry one, someone to go to when I needed comfort. Despite all her pains she always had time for me and my family. Helena was so wonderful to my two boys when they were young. She gave them a fun time -taking care of them when I needed a break, treated them at her favorite restaurants. I have seen her show kindness to all she knew.  Helena you have left a void in my heart which cannot be filled.  I will miss you so much and I know you will be a heavenly angel who will look over us.  I am going to miss your voice, your telephone calls.  So soon so quick without even saying Auf Wiedersehen! We love you Helena and will miss you terribly. Rest in peace Helena. You are now my angel in heaven.

I hope that we are able to respect your last will and we can bury you in your native place.

Helena was my dearest friend on earth since 1992 !  We shared our birthdays just two days apart and spent every birthday together, laughing and crying, sharing so much -- that it goes beyond words. Often other times we would talk on the phone for 4 or 5 hours and then end up spending the evening together going out to a Chef Ho or another place she loved.   She was so generous, magnanimous and loving -- giving of her great hospitality to many of us who loved and needed her, and helping to house many of the homeless and troubled in her church, who were going through exceptionally troubled times, when she had only pennies to share. She was the Good Samaritan in female form if ever there was one!  She made great sacrifices of her time and small reserves, even when in pain and physical ill-health herself, to cook the meals people loved, items of her special cuisine they appreciated, and share them -- oft-times even with paupers and the destitute  -- always with her best of linens and finest of china sparkling on the table to make each person feel special.  In her youth she had worked double and triple shifts and traveled to China and Japan to find things that would make her small studio apartment a place of unusual beauty, peace, serenity, exquisite taste in every detail, and so expressive of her extraordinary creativity, joi de vivre, and generous heart of love for others and for God.  Just to walk into all that beauty and serenity was something extremely rare and delightful and extremely special !  I shall miss that blessed moment of re-seeing all the beauty expressive of her and her prayerfulness so much in the future.    Her forgiving love of people, her deep sense of humor, wonderful laugh, strong sincere deep hug, and delightful smiling face -- her openness, friendliness, generosity and kindness made her a giant sunbeam in this dark world. She was a beautiful and radiant woman inside and out -- she really was -- and always a tender evangelist for our Lord !  She brought the love of God into many lives...and comforted people with her "spiritual vitamins" as she called them.  Her oncoming deafness was a tragedy I'm so deeply relieved our merciful Lord rescued her from.....as it would have isolated her brutally and more and more.  Yet, I can't stop weeping that she is not here.....My heart will forever weep that she is not nearby....that I cannot once again enter that haven of beauty and peace her apartment was and hear her consoling words!  

Helena, I know you are in the arms of Jesus and have a great reward before you in the kingdom of heaven!  I thank you dear friend.  I am so sorry our last birthday party was our goodbye!
