Henry helped shape the field of American Jewish history as a serious part of the academic world. He contributed so very much. He also was someone who at meetings and other gatherings was bursting with enthusiasm and knowledge. He helped make my career and I am so grateful to him.

Henry was a dear friend for more than 45 years. We met in New York while I was doing research for a paper in Zionism and I had read his book Zion in America.  Eversince that first meeting we were friends. Through all these years we exchanged letters and later emails and met in person on several occasions, discussing both our personal lives but also the political situation in the US, The Netherlands, Israel and the rest of the world.
I was happy to visit him twice during my last visit in November 2023.  Real quality time. He talked about his youth in Nazi Germany and his first years in the USA. He was also very concerned about what happened on October 7th. It seems to trigger his memories of his German past.. I ‘ll miss my erudite, lovely HENRY.

You will forever be in heart rest in peace my love.

My condolences to Henry's family.  I was a colleague of his in the Social Studies Department at Samuel Tilden High School in Brooklyn during the 60s and 70s.  Henry was a sweet guy, scholarly and a mentor to his fellow teachers.  I remember we were all upset when Henry moved into college teaching, but he left a legacy of caring and good humor.   RIP, dear friend.
