

He served in the US Army in Korea from 1954-1956. Married 1954 to Lois Hughson for 34 years until her death in 1989, and was the partner of Diana Shapiro for 25 years until her death in 2020. Howard had two sons from his marriage, Paul and Eric, and four grandchildren, Lindsay, Courtney, John and Livia.
He received his BA from Hofstra, MA from Columbia and PhD from NYU. He was a licensed clinical psychologist who practiced throughout his career and worked at various clinics in New York. Not taking to retirement easily, he continued to work at one clinic, the Johnson Counseling Center, as the supervising psychologist until he was 90. He ceased evaluating doctoral students for Adelphi at roughly the same time.
He had an active intellectual life. He enjoyed attending the ballet, symphony and opera, as well as Broadway shows and spent much of his free time at art exhibits. He liked nothing better than discussing philosophy or talking about art with his family and friends, as well as arguing about politics.
A funeral service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel, located at 180 West 76th Street, New York, NY 10023, on May 6, 2025, starting at 11:00 am. The service will be available via live stream at https://www.legacycelebrated.com/howard-hughson/.
Following the funeral, a committal service will take place at Mount Ararat Cemetery, 1165 NY-109, Lindenhurst, NY 11757, on May 6, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
