Born in Germany on August 7, 1928, Inge was the daughter of Frances and Philip Schmitt. She emigrated to the United States as a young girl with her parents and sister, Elsie, settling in New York City, which she proudly called home for the rest of her life.
In addition to being a loving spouse, mother, and grandmother, Inge built a career that reflected her strong work ethic and engaging personality. She worked for many years in sales at Gimbels and later served as a court clerk for New York State. One of her most memorable and cherished roles, however, was performing as a Tootsie Roll in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade — a joyful experience that perfectly captured her fun-loving spirit.
Inge was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Elsie Yurasits; and her beloved husband, Joseph Eugene Ryan, with whom she shared a long and loving marriage.
She leaves behind her cherished children: James Ryan and his wife, Paula, of Simsbury, CT; John Ryan and his wife, Denise, of Franklin Square, NY; and Joseph Ryan of New York, NY. She was the proud grandmother of Christopher, Casey, Dana, and Jack, who brought her immense joy.
Inge will be remembered for her quiet strength, her devotion to family, and her ability to find delight in life’s simple and special moments. She especially loved chocolate, cherished time spent at her beach home in Ocean Grove, NJ, and delighted in traveling with her girlfriends. Whether working hard, cheering on her grandchildren, or donning a costume to bring smiles to parade-goers, she embraced life with warmth, humor, and love. Her spirit will live on in the laughter of her family and the memories she created with all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Frank E. Campbell – The Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 25, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, East 87th Street, New York City. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens.
