Ira was a kind, gentle, and deeply thoughtful person. He had a quiet way about him that made people feel warm and at ease. He didn’t need to be the center of attention to make an impression. Just being around him felt steady and comforting, and that meant a lot to the people who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Deirdre Howley, whom he loved deeply; his brother, Marvin Eisenstadt, and Marvin’s wife, Roz; his nephews, Stephen and Jeffrey Eisenstadt; his nieces, Debra and Jill Eisenstadt; his close friend, Richard Osterweil; and the memory of his many beloved cats. His relationships were everything to him. He showed his love in simple, consistent ways, by being present, by listening, and by always showing up for the people in his life.
Ira graduated from Cornell University and later worked as manager and vice president of Cumberland Packing Corporation, the family business known for Sweet’N Low. He took that responsibility seriously and approached his work with integrity and care. He was respected not because he demanded it, but because he earned it over time.
He found happiness in the things he loved. He adored cats and cared for them with real tenderness. He enjoyed the thrill of opera and ballet, and he loved the beauty of basketball. More than anything, he loved his wife. That was clear to anyone who knew him. His devotion was constant and genuine.
Ira will be remembered as someone who lived with quiet strength and kindness. He showed the people around him what it means to be thoughtful, steady, and truly present. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Frank E. Campbell, The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, New York, New York.
