
Jane Mankiewicz, fiction writer, editor and teacher, died on March 9, 2026 at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale. She was 75. She was born in New York City on June 8, 1950 to Don M. Mankiewicz and Ilene Korsen Mankiewicz. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin and worked in the fiction department at The New Yorker from 1976 to 1984. She loved children and taught in the New York City public schools for Teachers and Writers Collaborative following her departure from The New Yorker. Her stories were published in the New Yorker and The Atlantic among other places. She was many times a fellow at MacDowell, a place close to her heart. Jane worked for Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers in the 1970's and was a dedicated member of The War Resisters League in New York City. Shae was on the organizing committee at The New Yorker when the staff tried to form a union during the Shawn years. Her stories were particularly known for their depiction of the personal, human side of the Vietnam War protest era. She is survived by her brother John Mankiewicz, her niece Molly Mankiewicz, her nephew Jack Mankiewicz and the cousins she loved, and by her dearest friend Wendy Salinger.
