On Monday, February 10th, 2020, Jerome "Romie" Burke made his transition in spirit in New York City at age 67. He was the loving husband to his wife of 42 years, Joy, father to Cathy (John) and grandfather to Emma, Lauren and Sean. He was especially close to nieces and nephews Kristin, Allison, Brendan, Kevin, Ryan, Jeff, Michael, Laura, Tommy, Kerry, Arlene, and many others. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth as well as siblings Paul, Gregory, Peter, Mary, Theresa and John. He is survived by beloved siblings Frank (Alice), Michael (Barbara), Thomas (Rose), Patrick (Janet), Patricia (Sam), Betty (Izzy), Rose, sisters-in-law Laurel, Donna, Suzanne and Eileen and dearest friend Liz.

Romie was one of a kind and impossible to describe in few words. Dressed to the nines for every occasion, Romie brought his heart and soul into every interaction. He lived life out loud and tended to inspire those around him. Whether he was betting on horses at the racetrack, excelling in his job in liquor sales for Empire Merchants, or relaxing with his cherished wife, Joy and two Boston Terriers, Hannah and Penelope in Saratoga, he enjoyed every moment.

Born and raised as one of 14 children on the West Side of Manhattan (he cringed when people called it Hell’s Kitchen), Romie was unlike anyone else. A perfect combination of New Yorker and New Ager, he had a passion for great music, nice clothes, politics, history, film noir and nice people. A great husband, a great brother, a great father and grandfather, a great uncle, a great colleague and friend, Jerome Burke will be missed by all who knew him.

Calling hours will be at Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave. at 81st St. on Sunday, February 16 from 1-4pm and 6-8pm. Memorial service will be at the same location on Monday morning at 10:30am.

Jerome was dedicated to helping the Friends of Saratoga County Animal Shelter to fulfill their mission of helping find permanent loving homes for every shelter animal. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you kindly make a donation to them at, PO Box 788, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. https://www.friendsofscas.org

When I first started in the spirits business, Jerome was one of the first distributor reps I was assigned. It was a great way to break me in and I learned so much about the business from working with Jerome. Jerome was such a huge legend in the spirits business in NYC and he helped build so many brands over the years. Lots of great memories with him... one that stands out is that he loved Schiller's Liquor Bar and was there every Tuesday for lunch until they closed a few years ago. Even after my company changed distributors, I would often show up there just to see him. I always loved catching up with him and hearing his unbelievable stories.
My thoughts go out to his family at this time, and it was so nice to see all of the pictures. Thank you for sharing those. Jerome will truly be missed by me and so many others.

I met Jerome when I was the spirits buyer at Keens, and we’ve been friends since. He was kind, generous, always available with advice and encouragement, and I’ll miss him. Joy, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Going to place a bet on a long shot, in Jerome’s honor. And not cash in the ticket. He always seemed most at home at the track. Whether in the Turf Club, scrutinizing the handicaps or out in the paddock checking out the behinds.
Jerry is, was and always will be buzzing around.
That lilt in his voice. Gleam of insight in his eye. Amen.
Us? We just got scratched from the race.
Long may he run.

Grew up with Roomie, Frankie and Patrick. Roomie was always the outgoing guy. Always looking to see what was next. He thought it was great when he found out joining the Safety Patrol in Sacred Heart we got badges.

The first time I met Jerry was at a sales meeting at Charmer Industries. He wore a Seersucker suit and traditional Spectators (shoes). I thought he had stepped from the pages of a Damon Runyon novel. It was a spectacular look and I secretly wished I could pull that off.
He was always full of advise. Usually unsolicited, fairly insightful and always appreciated.
In the 5 or so years we worked together I have a thousand stories that all end in laughter.
Miss you Jerry
