Born and raised in New York City, John was the son of Jonah Goldman and Rhea Greenwood. From an early age, he developed a deep love of sports, people, and community — passions that would define his life.
After a career spent in both the funeral business and then as an executive for Warner Communications, John dedicated much of his life to mentoring young people through basketball and hockey. Over the years, John had the privilege of coaching many young athletes, including Chris Drury and Elton Brand, who went on to earn the highest accolades in their respective hockey and basketball careers. His impact extended far beyond the court and rink — he shaped character, confidence, and community.
He was a devoted father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a man who truly loved people. John had a rare gift for making others feel seen and valued, always eager to learn about those around him and help in any way he could. His unmistakable New York accent and sharp, good-natured sarcasm were part of his charm and will forever echo in the memories of those who knew and loved him. His generosity of spirit, kindness, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; his children, Bruce Goldman (Rachel Frey) and Carolyn Roberts; his cherished grandchildren, Skylar and Carley Roberts; and his brother, Michael Goldman (Jane Goldman).
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 29 at 1:00 PM at Westchester Hills Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
For those who wish to honor his memory, our family kindly asks that donations be made to Parkinson’s disease research.
