Dear Scalettar family,  I was Josie's Italian teacher at Penn.  I just learned of her passing from the class newsletter that arrived yesterday, and I am just devastated.  Among all the students that I have taught over the years, Josie stands out in my memory among them all because there was something fascinating about her that I couldn't put my finger on.  Something so deeply sweet, delicate, or even fragile and enchanting.  Although I didn't have the privilege of getting to know her well outside of the classroom and library, she will always stand out in my memories of the time that I spent at Penn.  Please accept my deepest condolences for the enormous loss that the world has suffered at your beautiful sister and daughter's passing.  Her friends will never forget her!
