Lawrence Robert Bartlett

Those who knew Larry will remember him for his warmth. He was rarely seen without a smile on his face and a dog treat in his pocket, and treasured being part of the Central Park dog community accompanied by his beloved companion, Murphy.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, he earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, masters degrees in economics and public health from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. in economics from George Washington University. He served in the Peace Corps in Brazil and worked around the world with the African Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Aga Khan Foundation.

His warmth came with a deeply analytical mind, devoting his career to improving health care, both in the United States and around the world. He founded Health Systems Research, a consulting firm that partnered with states across the country and the federal government to expand access to health care, improve quality and safety, and reduce costs. He went on to teach health economics at George Washington University in Washington, DC and, after moving to New York City, he taught at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Dr. Bartlett is survived by his wife, Karen Ignagni; his son, Clay Bartlett; and his daughter-in-law, Arafel Bartlett.

There will be a Celebration of Life in the fall.
