Born on January 28, 1934, to Morris and Janice Plapler, Larry grew up in Washington Heights, where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated from New York University after his service in the U.S. Army.
Larry built a distinguished career in advertising, earning dozens of industry awards and accolades and proudly establishing his own agency. Words were his craft, but they were also his gift, and he shared countless perfect turns of phrase, nicknames, puns, and (often off-color) jokes with family and friends.
A competitive athlete and lifelong sports fan, Larry loved challenging himself and was especially proud of his sub-three-hour marathons. His commitment to fitness remained strong throughout his life. He did daily chin-ups and push-ups well into his eighties.
Larry loved Manhattan, but his heart was at home on his special island in Putnam Lake, New York. Some of his happiest days were spent swimming in the lake, barbecuing, and hosting the annual Family Olympics.
Above all, Larry was a gentleman, unconditionally loving and devoted to his family. He is survived by his cherished wife, Amelia Plapler; his dear sister, Barbara Schiff; and her husband, Nick Schiff, Larry’s lifelong best friend.
He was the treasured father of Dina Plapler and her husband, Earl McMahon; and Rina Plapler and her husband, Ben Katz.
He was the beloved Papa of grandchildren David McMahon and his wife, Kayla Angeletti; Steven McMahon and his wife, Corrin Hepburn; and Jackson Katz; as well as great-grandson Ezra McMahon and another great-grandson due this fall.
May his memory always be a blessing and an inspiration to his family.
